Divorce can cause a child to have two different realities

Posted On September 8, 2020 In Child Custody

Your girlfriends were jealous when you first started going out with your ex. One day you were waitressing in the local restaurant; next, you were being whisked around the world on a private jet.

Like many rags to riches tales, sometimes all that glitters is not gold. It was fun for a few years, but soon you realized you did not belong in that world of high-earners and had nothing in common with the people in your new life.

Now you are divorced, life is financially less comfortable, but you are happier. While your daughter lives with you most of the time, her dad likes to spoil her when he sees her. You worry about the effect this will have on her.

Try to agree on some shared rules for your daughter, regardless of which home she is in. Maybe you only allow your daughter to go out with her friends on weekends. On school nights, she has to be in bed by 10 p.m. If her dad lets her attend all-night parties, you may worry she will be too tired to study, and rebel when you do not let her out.

Try to find common ground on things like technology. If your ex can afford to buy your child a brand-new sports car, that in itself is not a problem. New cars often come with increased safety features. The problem occurs if you do not believe your child can handle a fast car safely.

As with any child custody issues, the key to raising a healthy child is for the two parents to communicate and make certain decisions together. Contact our Chandler child custody attorneys today.
